COMBATTING IWT NEAR THE CHINA-LAO BORDER
Introduction
The Nanman village is located in Mengla County, Yunnan province, and in the buffer zone of Shangyong Nature Reserve.Driven by the interests of wildlife trade, illegal poaching, cutting, and other incidents occasionally occur and since the village is just a kilometer away from the China-Laos border, transnational illegal wildlife trade also happened sometimes, posing a greater threat to the wildlife Shangyong Nature Reserve.
In order to address this issue, in 2020, Global Environmental Institute and the Shangyong Sub-National Nature Reserve Management Bureau collaborated to implement the project in Nanman village. Through the Community Conservation Concession Agreement mechanism, 16 households in Naman village signed the agreement to promise no participation in illegal wildlife trade locally and transnationally and was encouraged to explore sustainable livelihoods with training and rotating fund.

Through awareness-raising workshops conducted regularly, local villagers increased their knowledge of wildlife conservation and the regulations they need to follow in the Nature Reserves, such as no cutting and hunting, and no harvesting of rare plants.

The 16 households got loans from the fund and 91% of them increased their incomes by 4,000 RMB (approximately 571 USD) on average.
