Carbon Stock Assessment Training in Mangrove Ecosystem

2024-04-17

Mangrove ecosystem is the most effective bio-sequestration in absorbing atmospheric CO2, as well as accumulating its unsaturated vegetation carbon and storing it in the sediment for long-term period.

Yagasu has run mangrove restoration and protection programs since 2005 and the restored mangroves have been validated and verified for carbon credits by VERA firstly in 2015. With years of experience, Yagasu team kindly offered to share knowledge on mangrove carbon stocks measurement, monitoring and reporting and co-organized the Carbon Stock Assessment Training with GEI for EASACCN members who are working on mangrove conservation projects on February 26th to March 1st.

The 5-days training included 3 days of class training sessions and 2 days of direct practical sessions in the field with a total of 21 participants. We studied the protocols for the measurement, monitoring and reporting of structure, biomass and carbon stocks in mangrove forests and learned how to analyze carbon data using carbon calculator and software. Yagasu also shared their scientific research on mangrove carbon sequestration in Indonesia and globally. In the field, both non-destructive and destructive methods were used to assess the 18 -years-old mangrove plantation in Dringu Village, Probolinggo with dominant Rhizophora sp. and co-dominant Avicennia Mariana.
